This week, The Path wrapped up it’s first season on Hulu with a pretty jaw-dropping ending. The 10-episode series was a really fascinating example of storytelling in a lot of ways: the entire ride was dramatic and emotional and thrilling and weird, all at the same time. Also? The Path was sexy as hell.
The show stars Michelle Monaghan and Aaron Paul as married couple Sarah and Eddie, who, along with their family are members of the Meyerist Movement, led by the dynamic Cal (Hugh Dancy). For as much as the characters will argue it, plain and simple, this is a cult. They know how to swoop into a devastating situation to recruit members, this being the case for the fragile Mary (Emma Greenwell). The members believe that they are enlightened and what they are doing is right, and that they will live completely within the teachings of their holy book, The Ladder. Except Eddie starts to have some doubts, and now we have ourselves a TV show.
So let’s get to the good stuff, because this show wastes no time with that. Seriously, there’s an average of 1-3 super sexy scenes per episode. Sarah’s family has always been a part of this movement, and it was his love for Sarah that brought Eddie into the mix. It’s a real, deep love. And we know that because he sticks with this bogus religion but also because wow, the love making. More often than not, Eddie and Sarah end an argument with sex. Passionate, thrusty, moan-inducing sex. They try to keep it to the bedroom but in episode 9, spoiler alert, they get right down do it on the floor of the kitchen.
The sex scenes on The Path depict power struggles and delusions and uncertainly. But this show also isn’t afraid to show sex for what it is: animalistic yet vulnerable, healing and damaging, and a way to feel good when everything else feels bad. And props to them for constantly switching up the givers, the receivers and the positions, keeping it fresh for the characters and viewers alike. While these characters are in search of emotional and spiritual pleasure, it sure is fun to watch them achieve frequent physical pleasure.
