​How to watch the best out of Netflix

Here's several ways to tweak Netflix to improve your viewing.

DELETE TITLES FROM YOUR HISTORY

If you don't want everyone to know you've been watching the latest Adam Sandler movie, then you need to delete your viewing history. Once you've logged in, go to Your Account, select My Profile and then click Viewing Activity.

You can then select what you want to remove, and this will also delete them from the activity log which means they won't influence Netflix's auto-recommendations.

SYNC WITH FRIENDS

Watching a show at the same time as friends used to be easy but with streaming services it's getting harder to co-ordinate.

One company is trying to solve the problem by creating an extension for your Chrome browser so you can synchronise your viewing with friends and chat online.

Everyone watching needs to have the free Showgoers plugin installed so when you are all online, the Netflix timeline and controls turn red to show they're in sync.

GET THE LATEST FEATURES

Netflix has a feature on that lets you see new changes before they are rolled out to everyone. Under Your Account, go to "Test participation" and toggle the switch to "on" to see previews before they launch.

TELL IT WHAT YOU LIKE

Netflix automatically gives you recommendations based on your viewing habits, but if you want them to be more accurate take the time to fill out the "taste preferences" section under Your Account.

It's incredibly detailed and would take nearly five minutes to go through the choices but it will mean you only get served what you like.

You get to set about a dozen categories from mood, genre, release date and storyline. But you can go deeper and set the kind of sports movies you like and your sub-genre preferences.

CREATE MULTIPLE PROFILES

This also ensures you get the best recommendations and is especially good if you've got children. You can create up to five profiles and set some as "Kids only" so your children only see shows suitable to their age.

It's also handy if your flatmate or partner has vastly different tastes from you so someone's romantic comedies don't clutter someone else's documentaries.

GET THE BEST QUALITY

If you have ultra-fast broadband you can tick a box that ensures you get the highest quality video stream. If you don't have fibre, leave this on auto.

GET THE WRITING RIGHT

If you watch a lot of show with subtitles, then you may want to adjust the font, size and colour. Once again, go into Your Account and click on "subtitle preference" to make your choices.

PROTECT YOUR ACCOUNT

If you suddenly see odd recommendations on your account, then someone may have access to it. You can check this by going to Your account and then "viewing activity".

It will show you what you last watched. Clicking on "see recent account access" will give you a list of what devices have accessed your account. If you think someone has used one of your devices, then go back to Your Account and click on "sign out of all devices".
